The following wines, already a success in Europe and the |
| United States, |
|
Hong Kong by Abrate & Sons. |
|
|
| ROAGNA: |
|
Alfredo Roagna, his wife Luigina,
and their son Luca are all thoroughly involved at every stage of the winemaking
here, from the grape on the vine to the finished product in the bottle.
This gives Alfredo an absolute knowledge of every aspect of his wines,
and keeps the wine making technique careful and traditional. This care
and attention is all repaid in Roagna's superb, well-structured wines,
aged to preserve the complete typicality of the grape. The winery itself is located in the world-renowned "comune" (pronounced "com-oo-neh") of Barbaresco, around 1 km from the village of Barbaresco itself, and dates back to Alfredo's grandfather Vincenzo Roagna, who began it all in the early 1900s. |
| PAJE' 1997 |
|
The
1997 is an outstanding vintage. From the Paje' vineyard, this Barbaresco
reflects Roagna's family philosophy of long skin contact fermentation,
and long maturation in wood. This is one of Roagna's best classic red wines. The colour is an intense garnet-red with reflections of orange. The bouquet is rounded, with hints of violet, spices and preserves. Its' flavour is full and delicate, with well balanced tannins, and a heady mix of blackberry, dried flowers and mushroom notes.
|
| CIABOT BERTON: |
|
The first Barolo of Luigi Oberto is dated 1960. His estate, "Ciabot
Berton", is situated in La Morra, and operated by Luigi, his father
Giovenale and wife, Maria Beatrice. A few years ago his daughter Paola
(an Agronomist) and son Marco (an Oenologist), also joined the family
business.

"Roggeri" |
|
Made of 100% Nebbiolo grapes from
the 35 year old Roggeri vineyards. Aged in medium toasted French oak barrique,

and cinnamon, and plenty of cassis and blackberry flavours. Production: 5,000 bottles only
|
| Barolo, D.O.C.G. 1997: |
|
A blend of Nebbiolo grapes from
Roggeri, Bricco San Biagio and Rive vineyards. This is an outstanding "botti"
- aged Barolo: dense texture, aromas of plums, dried
roses, tar, liquorice and white truffle. Silver medal winner at the International
Wine Challenge, Hong Kong 2001.
Production: 10,000 bottles |
| LA CAPLANA: |
|
..."The legend tells that
Garibaldi drank their wine"... The Guido family has overseen the vine growing
and the wine production at La Caplana since the last century. The old Vignavecchia vineyard
at La Caplana was fortunately saved from the terrible "Phylloxera"
that blighted the area in 1925, by Natalino Guido's grandfather, employing a novel graft on "american stubs".
The care of La Caplana was then passed to Natalino's father Gerolamo, who kept on growing and planting vines on the high hills
at Vignavecchia, which present considerable working difficulties due to
the steep slopes. Today, Natalino Guido
is proud to be 'at the helm' of La Caplana, keeping his family's dedication
to their winemaking alive in his distinctive and satisfying wines. |
|
Gavi docg del |
|
This white wine, produced from
Cortese grapes, cultivated on a clayey white soil and on 30-year-old vines,
is full bodied and rich. Fruity and aromatic with mineral notes and a
lovely citric finish, it is wonderful as an aperitif, and an excellent
accompaniment to all kinds of hors d'oeuvres, fish and white meat dishes.
|
| CASCINA BARISEL: |
|
Enrico Penna runs "Cascina
Barisel", and has always been involved in the cultivation of their
vines. Supported by their father's experience, Enrico's young, dynamic
sons, Giovanni and Franco, have reorganized the business with the aim
of raising quality levels. In this small,
traditional but simply run winery, work is carried out not only with passion,
but also with respect for tradition, to make sure the quality produced
in the vineyard is maintained in the bottle. Production is
limited to a few thousand bottles a year, destined for the consumption
of wine lovers and connoisseurs around the world. |

Candied fruits and spicy aromas predominate in this golden

Very smooth and velvety, with a long finish. It is made with noble rot
